What is the treatment for a dental implant?

During your initial consultation, your dentist will take X-rays and scans of your mouth. They will also review your medical history to establish if a dental implant is right for you.

A local anaesthetic is first administered to numb the area to be treated. The gum is then cut open to expose the jawbone. Your dentist will permanently secure the insert into the jaw bone and fit a temporary crown onto the insert.

What happens after an implant treatment?

Some patients may feel some soreness, swelling or sensitivity for a few days after the implant procedure has been completed. You should avoid using chewing or eating hard food for around two weeks.

After several months, the implant will normally have started to fuse with the jawbone. This fusion ensures optimal stability and longevity of the insert.

A dental crown will then be custom-made which will be permanently bonded to the insert. The prosthetic tooth will have a virtually identical size, shape and appearance as a natural tooth.
