Sedation

Sedation can be required for complex surgical dental procedures or used to help patients with acute dental anxiety.

What is sedation?

IV sedation involves the injection of a sedative through a vein in your arm or hand that makes you feel drowsy, just before your treatment.

Sedation is safe when administered by your dentist at the practice, where we constantly monitor your vital signs. Patients often do not remember anything about their dental treatment, even though they do not fall asleep.

Is sedation right for me?

At Springburn Dental Care, we are able to administer intravenous (IV) sedation to patients if appropriate. However, some medical conditions requiring prescription drugs may not be compatible with sedation.

Being sedated can help you feel more comfortable during your treatment, particularly for extractions and complex dental procedures.

Sedation may also be appropriate if you have:

• Acute anxiety
• Severe teeth or gum sensitivity
• Difficulty keeping your mouth open
• Oral surgery such as implants and restorative work
• Multiple dental procedures

You will still receive a local anaesthetic to numb the area around the tooth to be treated as sedatives are not painkillers.

If you are sedated, you must be accompanied by a responsible adult. After your treatment, you must be accompanied until the effects have completely worn off. This may take up to 24 hours. During this time, you should not drive or operate machinery, smoke or consume alcohol.

Your dentist will advise you on sedation during your consultation appointment.
